Steven Norman “Steve” Carlton (born December 22, 1944) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who was nicknamed “Lefty.” He pitched for six different clubs from 1965 to 1988, but it was with the Philadelphia Phillies that he gained the most notoriety as a professional, winning four Cy Young Awards. In 1994, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Carlton has the fourth-most career strikeouts (4th overall) and the second-most lifetime victories (4th overall) of any left-handed pitcher (11th overall). In his career, he was the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards. Between 1982 and 1984, he held the career strikeout record many times until being overtaken by Nolan Ryan. When he won 27 games for the last-place (59-97) 1972 Phillies, he set one of his most amazing records, accounting for over half (46%) of his team’s victories. He is the last pitcher in the National League to win 25 or more games in a season, as well as the last pitcher in any league to throw more than 300 innings.
