Nick Merico is a 22-year-old singer/actor who has acted in a popular Nickelodeon show, Every Witch Way. Merico has also released popular songs such as “If You Were My Girl,” and recently “Save Your Love.” CelebMix had the chance to interview Nick Merico about his upcoming projects.
How did you get into music?
It kind of started when I was younger, and I heard a song and then I couldn’t stop singing. Then my parents were like, dude this kid sings day in, day night, like non-stop. Then I was in chorus class and the teacher asked if anyone wanted to sing a song and someone pushed me up and said like “Nick, you gotta sing,” and so from that moment on when I singed for the whole class I knew that’s what I wanted to do.
What’s the message behind “Save Your Love?”
“Save Your Love” is kind of like a self-independent thing. Proving to yourself that you don’t need somebody who’s been like abusing you, not even abusing you, but someone that doesn’t find you as worthy as you think you should be. It’s kind of like, listen, I’m moving with my life, I don’t need you and I don’t need you to tell me that I like you to prove to myself that I’m worth something.
What was your music video concept for the song?
We wanted to keep it really simple, we wanted to focus on myself and my own emotions without having too much special effects, without having too much CGI. So, we thought it would be really good frontier to show my fans who I really am with the music video.
Since “If You Were My Girl,” how would you say your music has changed?
I think the music has changed mostly like in the way that the lyrics are written and the way the production sounds. It definitely sounds a lot more mature, especially with the production, it’s not as teeny bopper anymore. Also, the vocals in general I believe we spend a lot more time on the production, a lot more time finalizing it and making it sound like next level.
Do you have a favorite song you’ve written?
I do, I haven’t really released it yet, but I have a video of it ready to go. It’s called “Call You Tomorrow.”
When can we expect new music?
Definitely in the summer.
Who are some of your idols?
I have a few, definitely one of my songwriting idols happens to be The Beatles because when I was about 15/16 years old I had played The Beatles day in and day out, learned the chords and the melodies. For singers, Johnny Hathaway because he really brings so much soul when he sings and that’s something I definitely take influence of. I love the creativity of Queen, I love the stage presence of Michael Jackson, like all these people kind of take different things from.
What are some of your summer goals?
Some of my summer goals are to have like two music videos out and to start performing at a bunch of places, like venues and concerts. I want to release more music. I want people to see more of who I am, that’s one of the big goals I have. I want people to hear more of what I have to say through my music and also through social media. I kind of just want to expand of who I am.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
There are some people that’s out there that I really like. I really love the sound of Majid Jordan, I think he sounds fantastic. Black, I think his music is so cool. Those are some of the modern people that come to my mind that I really would like to work with right now.
When it comes to writing your music, do you have any rituals you do before?
I like to work out before because it clears my mind, or at least like meditate. I find myself whenever I take ten deep breaths for example I can think like way clearer. The stress of like “oh I have to write a song,” goes away and it comes naturally.
