EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Cody Fry

June 2024 · 4 minute read

Cody Fry is a rising star from Nashville who recently released his new album ‘Flying‘. The LP was recorded with an orchestra that multi-talented Fry impressively scored and arranged himself. The rising star also has over 200,000 monthly listeners on streaming site Spotify and is adding more daily.

Here we speak exclusively to Cody Fry about his latest album, new single, dream collaborations and much, much more;

Growing up, who inspired your love of music?

Definitely my father. He is a composer and has been working in music my entire life. He wrote lots of TV jingles back in the 80s and 90s, but now writes mostly symphonic music for orchestras all over the world. My dad could never hide his love of music. It’s a joy that just bubbles up; his excitement is so apparent. Some of my earliest memories I have as a child are of him and me rocking out in the studio.

Who are your musical inspirations as of right now?

Honestly, I’m all over the place. I’ve been listening to a lot of classical music, lots of film music. But also lots of pop music and some 80s classics. To put names to those things, I’d probably list John Williams, Debussy, Max Martin, Mr. Mister. John Legend’s record ‘Darkness & Light’ has been playing a lot in my house. Also, Ethan Gruska’s record ‘Slowmotionary’ is incredible.

If you could collab with anyone, who would you choose?

Great question, and it’s a tough one to answer since that list is pretty endless for me. Just from a purely educational standpoint, I’d have to say John Williams. He’s the guy that wrote the music for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park; the guy is a legend. Just to watch him work would be like a Ph.D course.

What inspired your new single ‘Flying’?

‘Flying’ is about a guy who jumps off of a cliff because God told him he’d be able to fly, or at least that’s what he believes. He quickly finds out that flying might not be quite that easy. I think a lot about faith and risk-taking, and how to deal with adversity and disillusionment. Those are the themes that inspired ‘Flying’. And on a personal level, my journey through the music industry has been filled with moments that feel like jumping off of a cliff. I don’t like to be too specific about the inspiration for a song because I want people to make it their own, but that’s the gist of it.

What do you hope listeners take from the track?

I hope that people are inspired by it and that it’s a thought-provoking lyric. It comes from a pretty raw place in my heart. ‘Flying’ is for dreamers and believers, and maybe this song can put some words to the complex emotions surrounding faith and belief.

You recorded your new LP also titled ‘Flying’ with an orchestra that you scored and arranged yourself, how much fun was that?

Truly a bucket list experience for me. I absolutely love writing for orchestra and working with symphonic instrumentalists, and to be able to play with those textures on my own music was an absolute dream.

What can fans expect from the record?

It’s a pretty wide-ranging album, in terms of style. From straight-ahead pop tunes, to songs that are haunting and cinematic, I think each track has something special a bit a different. I’m biased, though.

Can fans expect to see you on tour soon?

Touring is my biggest priority for 2018. I’m working super hard on it, but obviously it’s a bit more difficult than just saying, “I’m going on tour.” I have some show announcements coming up and I’m excited about the possibilities for next year.

What do you hope to achieve over the course of your career?

I feel like making a living with music is pretty much all a guy like me can ask for. I want to create art that I’m proud of. That’s what I consider success, something worth aiming at.
